Working in the Refugee Camps in Croatia, 1994 This project came to fruition through a grant from an organization called the Earth Train and a group of highly spirited individuals who called themselves Give Peace A Dance. Being of Croatian descent, I was asked to be the photographer with my meager language skills. It's amazing how quickly one can learn when planted face first into a country that speaks so very little English. The group started out in Zagreb by running a conference with young adults on Conflict Resolution. From there we traveled to a number of camps in Croatia. The majority of pictures displayed here are of Bosnian and Muslim refugees who fled their villages and homes as troops "cleansed" the areas. You will see in this section mainly images of women and children as most of their husbands and fathers were killed or were still in prison camps. This was probably the single most proufound experience I have had to date in my life. To bring just a bit of joy to those folks was well beyond what gratification means to most. |
